Club History

Organised football in Skerries goes back a long way, with a Skerries Celtic side playing in the town as far back as the 1930s. The club as we know it today was born in 1990, when two local clubs decided they'd be stronger together. Skerries United had been fielding senior teams since 1946, and Home Celtic United had been running schoolboy and schoolgirl football since 1982.

It was a good call. A proper schoolboy section was set up that first year, and by the mid-1990s the club was running around 20 underage teams. Players from those teams were being picked for representative panels and national schoolboy squads. Brian McDonough was our first Chairman, steering the club from day one until 1998. Gerard "Chad" Duff was our first President, from 1990 to 1999.

On 27th April 1997 we opened our own clubhouse at Park Lane. The President of Ireland at the time, Mary Robinson, performed the official opening. That same season, the Leinster Senior League named us "Most Progressive Club of the Season," which was a fair reflection of how far we'd come in just seven years.

In 2003 we started the Kids Academy to give young children their first fun, non-competitive taste of football. It's still the first step into the club for most of our players today.

FAI Cup Exploits

Monaghan & Bohs

The 2002/03 season still gets talked about around Park Lane. Over 700 home supporters packed in to see Skerries knock League of Ireland side Monaghan United out in round 2. It's one of the great days in the club's history. The run ended at Dalymount Park, where Bohemians won 3-0, but what a ride it was.

Waterford

In 2018 the cup brought Waterford to town. Park Lane wasn't big enough to host an FAI Cup tie, so the game moved to Skerries Rugby Club, and Skerries Golf Club pitched in to help get the ground ready. If you ever wanted proof of our "One Team, One Town" spirit, that was it. A Noel Hunt hat-trick did the damage in a 4-1 win for Waterford, but Skerries gave them a proper game. You can see the highlights here.

Finn Harps

In 2023 we made the long trip to Ballybofey for a round 2 tie against Finn Harps. A big travelling support made the journey, and the lads never stopped running, but Harps ran out 5-0 winners. You can see the highlights here.

The Club Today

The club that started as two small clubs coming together in 1990 now has over 900 members and 41 teams:

  • Two senior men's teams in the LSL
  • A senior ladies' team in the LFL
  • Boys' and girls' teams from U8 to U18 in the DDSL
  • A Kids Academy for boys and girls aged 4 to 7
  • Football4All, running since 2020 with Skerries All Abilities Friendly Town, for children with additional needs and their siblings

What's Next

The last couple of years haven't been easy. Problems with the clubhouse put real pressure on the club, but those are behind us now, and we're looking forward. Through our Buy a Brick campaign, we're working to turn Park Lane into a proper community hub, with an all-weather pitch and a modern clubhouse that everyone in the town can use. Every player, parent, coach, volunteer and supporter is part of that story.

One Team. One Town. One Dream.
